Canyons by Mikayla

A canyon is a basically a cliff that is formed by erosion. Canyons need a rocky plain. Canyons are formed by rivers. What the rivers do is they wash away the sides and that builds up. This is called erosion. Canyons are formed in hot climates. You can take the Grand Canyon as an example because it is in Arizona. Most canyons were made over 1.7 billion years ago. The Grand Canyon was discovered in 1540, but was made over 1.5 million years ago. (Most canyons weren't discovered until much later than they were formed.) Today the Grand Canyon is a popular tourist attraction in the United States and Arizona.

My sources are:
Casil, Amy Sterling, The Creation of Canyons, 2010.
The New Book of Knowledge, vol.7, 2007.
"Grand Canyon", EBSCO, Grand Canyon.

You answered your questions with lots of detail.

Were canyons formed 1.7 billion years ago, or was it 1.7 million years ago? I wasn't able to find this fact in your information sources.
